Indie rock, progressive pop, and alternative dark pop are one of the many genres City of Glass explores on their latest release. This duo’s new EP Monogyny is a definite step forward in defining their current sound, with Michael Champion’s hypnotic voice heard clearly through the tight yet ambient instrumentals.
I can definitely hear the musical tips and ricks COG have picked up from Germany’s electronic music scene along with other influences such as Foals, The Cure, and New Order. COG captures the feelings of abandonment and despair but also provides the listeners with a message of hope, that they are not alone. This thematic duality balances the emotional attributes of the melody within these songs. With this EP, COG easily achieves the goal of listener engagement throughout the entirety of its run time.
When I read the backstory of City of Glass and it’s band members and listened to this EP for a second time, I wasn’t surprised by the visual element that makes up the band’s sound and image . David Phu an award winning fashion photographer and Michael Champion is a film composer and together they create a sonic imagery that relates with each listener’s personal experiences. Listening to Monogyny, I recall the experiences of solo hiking, feeling refreshingly lost but relieved for the quiet moments away from a busy life. Take a listen to COG’s Monogyny EP on Bandcamp and let them know what experiences you recall.
